Champions for Children (formerly Child Abuse Council)

Please scroll down to learn more about our agency, our new name and what we do for the children and families in our community!

The Child Abuse Council is pleased to announce its new name, Champions for Children, to the community and the families we serve. While our mission remains the same, the nature of our agency has transitioned from treatment based services to child abuse prevention and family education programs. We focus on the importance of prevention and how prevention will lend itself to insuring every family in Hillsborough County can become a good, better and best family. We envision a world without child abuse and believe strengthening the bonds between parents and children is a vital step in realizing that vision.

But why change names? Quite simply, Champions for Children better reflects who we and what we do. It highlights our shift from helping families in crisis to helping every family, any family. The name change brings empowerment and encourages everyone to be a "champion" for children. It reinforces the importance of investing in our community, our families and our children's future.

Since 1977, our agency has been working towards the betterment of families. As an accredited agency, we operate in accordance with nationally defined best practice standards and consistently strive to deliver superior services to our children and families. Each year, our highly trained and educated staff strengthens more and more throughout the county, providing valuable and measureable services that help children grow and reach their fullest potential. In 2011 alone, Champions for Children served 36,650 children and their families.

According to the Florida Child Abuse Hotline, Hillsborough County currently ranks fourth in the state for reported incidences of child abuse and neglect. With the help and support from the community we serve, Champions for Children will continue to provide valuable resources throughout the county that will help parents understand and promote their child's healthy, optimal development.

Yes, there is a lot in a name and our new name says who we are and what we do. We are CHAMPIONS FOR CHILDREN and we help build strong families because in the end that is what every child needs.
